We're No. 1 ... again! N&0

by Sarah Ovaska - Staff writer

Raleigh, long the darling of Top Ten lists, got another accolade this week after getting named the U.S. city with the best overall quality of life by Portfolio.com, an online business magazine. The city's stable business community and reasonable cost of living earned the City of Oaks its high rankings, according to Portfolio.com/bizjournals. "Raleigh can’t match the cultural splendor of New York, the financial clout of Chicago, or the ethnic diversity of Los Angeles," the survey authors wrote. "But it does have plenty of attractive qualities of its own." Those qualities - being a Mecca for high-tech industries, home to N.C. State University and serving as the state capital -- put Raleigh ahead of the 66 other metropolitan areas analyzed. The survey also took the educational systems, local economies, cost of living, commuting times and housing costs into account. The City of Oaks beat out cities like Austin, New York and San Jose, Calif. Charlotte, Raleigh's in-state rival, came in 16th.The survey includes an interactive feature that tracks how different cities compare in housing costs, educational levels and population growth.
